Studies have shown that post pandemic has resulted in a high amount of loneliness in young people. Hobbies could be the solution.

The team at Sidekick wanted to help youth reconnect. They worked students of the University of Oregon to find out the major pain points and causes. They wanted to encourage users to also meet in person. This is also daunting, so we looked into organic meetings which is what resulted in a hobby/activity based matching algorithm.

We were brought on the project to help them design the app and core features to use in product funding.

We identified commonalities and opportunities through user personas, user journeys and affinity maps.

These findings helped drive the decisions and ideas of the product.

Most of our team were quite a few years older, so it was really important to understand the current young adult experience. None of use grew up with social media and mobile devicies, so it was really eye opening to understand how isolating today's environment can be.

Findings to Features to Action:

One of the key findings was how important the feel of the meetup would be. They wanted a no-pressure casual hang out. So this created the 3 pillars of meetings. The "Kickit" for just a casual hang, "Groups" so users can easily find others that have the same interest, and "Events" which would be official events hosted by the organization.

Conclusion

Our team successfully delivered a working prototype to the client. They were able to gain funding to be able to develop the product and launch in the iOS store in 2023 which was met with positive reviews.

The focus was launching on the Oregon University campus outreach program.
